  • Semaglutide is a medication used to manage type 2 diabetes and support long-term weight loss. It belongs to a class of drugs known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic the action of the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone released after eating.

    How Semaglutide Works

    Semaglutide activates GLP-1 receptors in the pancreas, digestive tract, and brain, producing multiple beneficial effects:

    • Increases insulin secretion (in a glucose-dependent manner), helping to lower post-meal blood sugar

    • Reduces glucagon production, which limits glucose release from the liver

    • Type 2 Diabetes: Helps improve blood sugar control in adults

    • Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD): May reduce the risk of kidney function decline and cardiovascular death in people with type 2 diabetes and CKD

    • Weight Management: At higher doses (under the brand Wegovy®), it’s approved for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight and at least one weight-related condition

    Administration

    Semaglutide is usually given as a once-weekly injection. It’s also available in a daily oral tablet form (Rybelsus®) for type 2 diabetes.
